Visit to Institute for the Deaf and Mute
|
A team of volunteers including our CEO Jon Eddy Abdullah visited the Sir Syed Deaf Association and training center in Islamabad. The facility functions as a community center for the deaf people where computer training courses are conducted, conferences and cultural programs arranged, access to internet facility and a library provided.
The experience of meeting with the deaf community, a first time for most volunteers, was an eye-opening experience and brought up mixed emotions. Being unable to communicate with the deaf community without adequate knowledge of sign language made the volunteers feel helpless. With the help of an interpreter, they were able to discuss and share the issues faced by the persons with disabilities and understand their requirements. The visit helped identify the need for having basic sign language training and disability equality workshops in order for employees to be able to fully integrate with fellow persons with disabilities hired within the company in future.
