Telenor reaches Jehlum

ISLAMABAD, May 23, 2005: Telenor Pakistan has officially opened its GSM mobile network for commercial service in Jehlum.

Telenor is offering all its commercial cellular services including its time-limited offer of free SMS to all operators and free MMS to all Telenor connections.

By launching in nine cities and soon providing coverage to Motorway and GT Road, the Telenor network will cover a population of approximately 35.29 million people including the main cities of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Hyderabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat and now Jehlum.

Further cities will be added according to the continuous roll out plan. The license conditions demand 70% coverage of all Tehsil Headquarters by year 4.

On April 14, 2004, Telenor received a GSM licenses for the price of US$ 291 million. By the new licenses, Pakistan will have 6 competing mobile operators in a country with the population crossing 150 million and a mobile penetration of 5%. Telenor launched its services in March and reported 343,000 subscribers only two weeks after the commercial launch.

Telenor Pakistan is the newcomer among the 12 Telenor mobile companies worldwide with a total subscriber base of 60.1 million worldwide. The company is 100% owned by Telenor and adds on to our operations in Asia together with Thailand, Malaysia and Bangladesh.
