Telenor officially opens its mobile services in Pakistan

Islamabad, March 15, 2005: Today, Telenor Pakistan is officially opening the GSM mobile network for commercial service. This is less than one year after receiving the GSM mobile license and much faster than the normal time needed to set up a new network. Telenor will match all the cellular services available in the market and, in addition, introduce new features out of its international mobile experiences.

The official opening was held in Islamabad with the President of Pakistan General Pervez Musharraf as the guest of honor and a Telenor delegation headed by CEO Jon Fredrik Baksaas.

The President was requested to make the first phone call to the Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik, to mark the official opening of the network. More than 400 people and national as well as international media were present at the occasion.

On April 14, 2004, Telenor received a GSM licenses for the price of US$ 291 million. By the new licenses, Pakistan will have 6 competing mobile operators in a country with the population crossing 150 million and a mobile penetration of 5%.

By launch, the network will cover a population of approximately 20 million people including the main cities of Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Karachi. By March 23, the roll out plan will also include Lahore, Faisalabad and Hyderabad which covers a population of 12 million. Further cities will be added according to the continuous roll out plan. The license conditions demand 70% coverage of the population by year 4.

Sales and Distribution will develop in accordance with the launch campaign. With the launch, Telenor is presenting itself to the customers by 8 customer service centers 34 franchises, and several thousand retail outlets.

The construction of the network is a joint effort between Siemens and Nokia.

Telenor Pakistan is the newcomer among the 12 Telenor mobile companies worldwide with a total subscriber base of 52.4 m worldwide. The company is 100% owned by Telenor and completes our operations in Asia together with Thailand, Malaysia and Bangladesh.
