Telenor applies for AJK and NA license

ISLAMABAD, May 29, 2006: Telenor Pakistan today, in response to invitation from Government of Pakistan, announced to apply for License in Azad Kashmir and Northern (AJK & NA) Areas after paying a fee of USD 5 million. The remaining USD 5 million is to be paid in 10 annual installments.

In October 2005, when the nation was struck with the most devastating earthquake in its history, Telenor Pakistan was quick to respond to the needs of the victims. Sites in Balakot went online within 3 days and in Muzaffarabad within two weeks of the disaster. Free PCOs were set up and free talk time was offered to the victims of the earthquake. In addition, handsets were provided to the rescue teams to aid relief work. Telenor Pakistan joined hands with the government in its quest to provide basic necessities to the victims and further intends to continue the efforts to rehabilitate the earthquake hit areas.

The reconstruction of hit areas is already underway and we wish to convey our appreciation for governments remarkable effort in bringing normalcy to life in the effected areas, said Tore Johnsen, CEO Telenor Pakistan. We are already operating in main cities of Azad Kashmir, where we had initiated services on humanitarian ground after President Musharraf allowed interim operations in the region in an attempt to provide communications to facilitate the quake-hit people and relief organization. We are now happy to bid for permanent license and have completed all required formalities of the procedure, he added.

Opening of AJK & NA areas to telecom operators will bring considerable economic and social benefits to the people of these areas. The impact of mobile services on the economy of AJK & NA will potentially be far reaching.
