Telenor Pakistan sponsors Shandur Polo Festival 2007

Chitral June 12, 2007: Telenor Pakistan, the largest cellular network of Northern Areas & Azad Kashmir, will sponsor the most exciting polo tournament of the region - The annual Shandur Polo Festival 2007. This was announced today after an agreement was reached between Telenor Pakistan and Orchard (Organization for Resource Conservation Habitat and Rural Development), the appointed event managers by Ministry of Tourism, Government of Pakistan. Arranged at the highest polo ground of the world and enjoyed by more than 10,000 local and international visitors, the festival will witness a traditional polo tournament between the teams of Gilgit & Chitral from 7th- 9th July, 2007.

Commandant Chitral Scouts Col Zahid Hussain, Chairman Orchard Event Management Maqsood Ul Mulk, Director Marketing Telenor Pakistan Azim-ul-Haq and Regional Director North Telenor Pakistan Faisal Khan Sadozai witnessed the signing ceremony at Chitral.

Sigvart further added, Shandur Polo Festival has become a major event on the tourism calendar in Pakistan. However, this time around it should be even more fun as Telenor Pakistan is also funding the construction of an Amphitheater at Shandur Plains. The arena will provide a permanent base for folk music and dance performances during the festival. This will be the first-ever amphitheatre built at Shandur and is our gift to the local community.?

Elaborating on the significance of the festival, Prince of Chitral Siraj-ul-Mulk, who is also the Chairman of the Joint Chitral & Gilgit Polo Associations & Vice Chairman Orchard, said, The three day polo tournament, organized by Gilgit and Chitral polo clubs, local administration and Telenor Pakistan, will be played on top of Shandur Pass, around 3,700 meters above sea level. It is a place unique and exotic in itself, surrounded by some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world. The event marks the annual rivalry between the polo teams of Gilgit and Chitral. Supporters of both sides travel long distances from the remote parts, to watch the thrilling game. The event offers a fascinating insight into the lifestyle of the people of this region. Their culture and indigenous customs are a delight to observe for the visitors.?

This year, the Telenor Shandur Polo Festival will have some added attractions for the visitors: tampooq bazi, individual scoring competitions on horses, musical chairs on horses, donkey polo, paragliding show, camp fire, trout fishing at the nearby streams and lakes, handicraft exhibition and a festival of folk dances, cultural shows and music of the Northern Pakistan.
