Telenor Shandur Polo Festival to kick-off this Saturday

Islamabad June 6, 2007: Telenor Pakistan, the largest cellular network of Northern Areas & Azad Kashmir, is sponsoring the most exciting polo tournament of the region - The Annual Shandur Polo Festival 2007 that is being held from 7th to 9th July, 2007 in Shandur.

Arranged at the highest polo ground of the world, and enjoyed by more than 10,000 local and international visitors, the festival will witness a traditional polo tournament between the teams of Gilgit and Chitral.

Telenor Pakistans partner for the event is Orchard (Organization for Resource Conservation Habitat and Rural Development), the appointed event managers by Ministry of Tourism, Government of Pakistan.

Speaking on the eve of the event, Chief Marketing Officer Telenor Pakistan Sigvart Voss Erikson said: The Shandur Polo Festival has become a major event on the tourism calendar in Pakistan. However, this time around it should be even more fun as Telenor Pakistan is also funding the construction of an amphitheater at Shandur Plains. The arena will provide a permanent base for folk music and dance performances during the festival. This will be the first-ever amphitheatre built at Shandur and is our gift to the local community.?

This year, the Telenor Shandur Polo Festival will have some added attractions for visitors: tampooq bazi, individual scoring competitions on horses, musical chairs on horses, donkey polo, paragliding show, camp fire, trout fishing at the nearby streams and lakes, handicraft exhibition and a festival of folk dances, cultural shows and music of Northern Pakistan.
