Telenor Shandur Polo Festival 2008

June 10, 2008: Telenor Pakistan, the largest cellular network of Northern Areas & Azad Kashmir, will yet again sponsor the most exciting polo tournament of the region - The annual Shandur Polo Festival 2008. This was announced after an agreement was signed between Telenor Pakistan and Prince of Chitral Siraj-ul-Mulk. Enjoyed by more than 12,000 local and international visitors, the festival will witness a traditional polo tournament between the teams of Gilgit & Chitral from 7th- 9th July, 2008.

Minister for Culture Sports and Tourism NWFP Syed Aqil Shah, Chairman Orchard Event Management Maqsood Ul Mulk, Chairman of the Chitral Polo Associations Prince of Chitral Siraj-ul-Mulk, Regional Director North Telenor Pakistan Faisal Khan Sadozai were present at the signing ceremony at Peshawar.

Minister for Culture Sports and Tourism NWFP Syed Aqil Shah said that he was determined to promote tourism in the NWFP for the benefit of the people of the province especially those living in far flung areas like Chitral. He said that the Shandur Polo Tournament will be only the beginning of a series of festivals that have been planned in the NWFP during the present calendar year. He thanked Telenor Pakistan for their continued support for the promotion of polo in Chitral and the Northern Areas.

Emphasizing the importance of the agreement Regional Director North Telenor Pakistan Faisal Khan Sadozai said, Telenor Pakistan, acknowledged as the last word in cell phone communication in the Northern Areas, is delighted to have yet again partnered with Orchard to promote the cultural sport of Pakistan and the King of Games Polo! An event of international fame, Shandur Polo Festival has a long inspiring history, one of passion and excellence a tradition Telenor Pakistan shares in its own domain.?

Elaborating on the significance of the festival, Prince of Chitral Siraj-ul-Mulk, who is also the Chairman of the Chitral Polo Associations & Vice Chairman Orchard, said, After a break of two years this event is going to be once again managed by Sarhad Tourism Corporation (STC). The Spirit behind the Shandur Polo Festival in 2008 is Managing Director STC Mr Azam Khan, who has given the direction to enable the event to be highlighted this year as has never been done before.?

The three day polo tournament, organized by Gilgit and Chitral polo clubs, local administration and Telenor Pakistan, will be played on top of Shandur Pass, around 3,700 meters above sea level. It is a place unique and exotic in itself, surrounded by some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world. The event marks the annual rivalry between the polo teams of Gilgit and Chitral. Supporters of both sides travel long distances from the remote parts, to watch the thrilling game. The event offers a fascinating insight into the lifestyle of the people of this region. Their culture and indigenous customs are a delight to observe for the visitors.

Some added attractions for the visitors at the Shandur Polo Festival this year will be: horse racing without saddles, tampooq bazi, selection of the best horse of Chitral and the Northern Areas, paragliding and motorized gliding. Visitors will also witness a beautiful display of fireworks by an international company, known for their recent work at the Olympic Torch ceremony held in Islamabad.
