Telenor Pakistan Sponsors Shandur Polo Festival second year in a row

Islamabad July 10, 2008: Telenor Pakistan, the largest cellular network of Northern Areas & Azad Kashmir, sponsored the most exciting polo tournament of the region - The Annual Telenor Shandur Polo Festival 2008 from July 7 to July 9 2008. The polo festival was attended by approximately 25,000 local and foreign enthusiasts camping at 3700 meters above sea level to be a part of this exhilarating faceoff between the traditional rival polo teams of Gilgit and Chitral. The polo festival marks the beginning of a series of cultural and sports activities supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism NWFP to promote tourism in the province. Shandur Polo Festival 2008 has been sponsored for the 2nd consecutive year by Telenor Pakistan under its commitment to support and promote the rich Pakistani culture at both the national and international arenas.

The final match was inaugurated by Chief Minister NWFP Ameer Haider Khan Hoti on July 9, 2008. The spectators saw polo teams of Gilgit and Chitral ride the wind challenging each others will to uphold their honor and to win the champion title. The final match was played between Chitral-A and Gilgit-A. After a thrilling match, Chitral won over Gilgit by 9-7. Chitral Skipper, Shahzad Ahmad won the man of the match title after scoring a hat-trick. Chitral polo team has claimed this win third time in a row.

In addition to the traditional flavor of Polo, the Telenor Shandur Polo Festival 2008 had a lot more to offer. The Shandur valley presented the view of a mini-city of hundreds of camps. The spectators witnessed a musical show by local singers in the amphitheatre which was followed by a display of fireworks. The fireworks conducted by a French company and lasting for over 20 minutes were performed at the highest altitude ever and signified the spirit of the festival. The natural valley amphitheatre, carved in the surrounding hills with a stage in the center by Telenor Pakistan is a jewel to the crown and has already started contributing to the promotion of local culture and tourism.

Siraj Ulmulk, Prince of Chitral and Chairman of Chitral Polo Association which fielded the winning team said, We are extremely happy that we have won the title. Our team prepared extensively during the past weeks and our hopes were high. Polo at Shandur is not just a game but a matter of pride for us, and more of a ritual for the locals. The support from Telenor has been fantastic and I am very proud of the hype and the magnitude of the event which is growing every year.?

The Shandur Polo Festival 2008 was managed by Sarhad Tourism Corporation with event management support by Orchard Event Management (Organization for Resource Conservation Habitat and Rural Development) under patronage of the Ministry for Culture, Sports and Tourism.
