Telenor Pakistan supports 160 affected families of the Balochistan Earthquake

Islamabad 3rd November, 2008: Telenor Pakistans Emergency Response team distributed relief and food items among 160 affected families at Wam, near Ziarat in the aftermath of earthquake that hit Balochistan on October 29, 2008.Telenor Pakistan is the first corporate organization to reach the earthquake affected areas and distribute relief aid.

Telenor Pakistans Emergency Response team based on volunteers from Islamabad and Quetta, under the CSR umbrella actively took part in the relief efforts. Head of Corporate Responsibility, Syed Hasnat Masood commented, It is heartbreaking to see the victims of this calamity. We, at Telenor Pakistan feel that its our duty to help our brothers and sisters at this time of distress.? He also added, We have come all the way, to ensure that the supplies reach the deserving and are trying our level best to help as many families as we can in providing basic food items. Based on need analysis, we also aim to start a rehabilitation program.?

Almost all union councils in Ziarat are affected says Khurram, an eyewitness of the relief work and part of Telenor Pakistan Emergency response team. Some, like Wam, have many casualties, others have mostly witnessed damage to the infrastructure.

It is reported from local resources that over 70,000 have been affected and more than 300 died in the earthquake to hit Northern Baluchistan last week. Telenor Pakistan, with support from its Employees is planning a combined rehabilitation effort worth millions for the disaster-struck communities. Free telecommunications facilities have already been provided to PMA and PRCS to ensure communication from within the region. Efforts are being made towards not only immediate relief activities but also rebuilding the devastated communities. For organized efforts, Telenor Pakistan is also collaborating with Frontier Corps and other NGOs to provide maximum support to the deserving.
