Easypaisa Mobile Accounts to help empower people

KARACHI, July 4, 2011: Telenor Pakistan and Tameer Microfinance Bank Limited launched a branding campaign for one of their products under the branchless banking solution, Easypaisa. Through Easypaisa Mobile Account customers can send & receive money and pay their utility bills right from their mobile phone, anywhere, anytime.

Easypaisa Mobile Accounts, which are like normal bank accounts, can be opened at any Telenor Sales & Service Center, Telenor Franchise or Tameer Bank branch. The service is available for existing and new Telenor Pakistan customers.

Roar Bjaerum, Vice President Financial Services Telenor Pakistan highlighted the importance of mobile financial services. The provision of mobile financial services to the unbanked is associated with attainment of key economic and social goals. Easypaisa, a joint service of a telecommunication company and a microfinance bank, is well positioned to offer mobile financial services to those who are not availing any banking services. Easypaisa Mobile Account is a step in that direction and will offer people convenience, reliability, and empowerment.‚

Nadeem Hussain, President & CEO Tameer Microfinance Bank in his comments said: Tameer Bank is committed to improving the lives of the people of Pakistan through various financial initiatives. We believe that Easypaisa Mobile Account can become an important financial services tool by enabling the unbanked to send and receive funds easily, quickly and safely thereby obtaining access to credit, which can help to create new business activity and more jobs. Women's access to funds can also be improved, with positive effects on child education and health. The resultant activity can lead to a rise in Pakistans GDP and enhanced socio-economic indicators.‚

Once an Easypaisa Mobile Account is opened, customers can go to any of the 12,000 easypaisa shops and Tameer Bank branches in Pakistan to deposit cash into or withdraw cash from their Account. They can then transfer and receive funds and pay their utility bills from their mobile phone. They can also receive international remittances directly on their mobile phones and keep it in the account for safe-holding.

Telenor Pakistan and Tameer Microfinance Bank launched Easypaisa from 2,200 outlets in October 2009. Today, the number has crossed 12,000 mobile-banking points in 660 cities across Pakistan. Easypaisa outlets now outnumber bank branches in the country.
